Tracing the edge of the glaciers that covered much of Wisconsin during the Ice Age, this long-distance trail travels from Sturgeon Bay, near the shores of Lake Michigan, to St. Croix Falls, on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border. And it cuts through the area RIGHT HERE. The entire trail throughout the state is marked by yellow “blaze” rectangles to direct you along the way. You’ll encounter some of these markers while walking 1,240 feet (.23 of a mile) from the waterfall to the cache. Continue south along the Ice Age Trail and when you're .16 miles past the waterfall you'll pass a nice open air shelter on your left, at N43 24.850 W88 13.043. You're almost done. No need to stop there, unless you want to rest for a spell in the shade. 4. Continue south on the trail another 405 feet until you come to a tree on your left with a yellow blaze marker on each side, at N43 24.789 W88 13.043. Now you're really almost done! On your left (east) is Silver Creek. Don't go there. Go right (W/NW) off trail 33 feet uphill from that yellow marker and you’ll find the cache hiding behind a huge 40 foot long log, on the ground. You’re done! Duck tours are primarily offered as tourist attractions in harbor, river, and lake cities, and can be found in places such as Boston, Seattle, London, Pittsburg, San Diego, and Austin, with the largest U.S. operation located in our very own state - Wisconsin. The amphibious land-and-water vehicles in Wisconsin are known as the "Wisconsin Ducks." It was 1942 when the unique amphibious vehicles first rolled off the General Motors assembly line. Built to go to war, the land-and-water military craft, code named DUKWs, were simply nicknamed “ducks” by World War II soldiers. General Motors manufactured more than 21,000 Ducks between 1942 and 1945. When first produced, each cost $10,000. The Ducks finest hour came on D-Day – June 6, 1944 – where 2,000 of the vehicles participated in the historic invasion at Normandy, France. It is touted as the greatest amphibious operation in history and the turning point for the Allied Forces. Just a year later, the war would be over and surplus military supplies would be made available to the public. Among those were amphibious ducks. War veteran Bob Unger of Milwaukee plucked one up, and with his friend Mel Flath, brought it to Wisconsin Dells in 1946 to offer tours. Scenic boat excursions had long been a draw for tourists, so why not add a new twist – land-and-water tours all from one seat. Mrs. Lacknothing, however, must have been depreived as a child, for she had NEVER heard of such a game and thought for sure that Mr. Lacknothing was making it up. However, a quick Google search revealed that there was, indeed, such a game and we tweaked the game a little so that it would fit in with this year's theme of All Things Wisconsin. This was a game published by Milton Bradley in 1967, Feeley Meeley was a party game that challenged players to identify hidden objects using only their sense of touch. The object of the game was to collect more objects than the other players. Rather than collecting objects, you will need to identify five objects using your sense of feel. You will use the first letter of each of these objects to determine the letter code (it does NOT spell a word) for the lock which will allow you to access the log sheet. Then came bigger rectangular holes called trench silos, followed by the short, upright structures made of wooden boards fitted together (staves) or concrete and field stone. First upright silo in Wisconsin Dr. L.W. Weeks built two square stone and concrete upright silos on his Oconomowoc farm in 1880 that were acknowledged as the first “upright” silos in Wisconsin. The square silos had corners that hindered solid packing of the corn and the silage often spoiled, thus silos moved to a round shape. (Note: The Weeks farm was later to become a part of the famed Pabst Farms.) Silos by the thousands Silos on Wisconsin dairy farms sprouted like weeds as dairying replaced wheat as the main state agricultural enterprise and by 1889 there some 2000 silos across the state. A few of the first upright silos were built inside a round barn for feeding ease but because of the difficulty of filling and that the barns were limited in stanchion space, had a relatively short popularity. (Note: Silage results from storing a crop under anaerobic conditions that causes a fermentation process resulting in an end product called ensilage or silage.) In the late 1800’s Professor F. H. KIng at the UW-Madison, through extensive research, did much to popularize the round silo that went on to become the accepted form of preserving corn and hay in a fermented form. As dairying grew in Wisconsin, farmers were eager to try the new method of ensiling their summer crops for winter feed. Upright silos were made of many materials: Wood, stone, brick, steel, tile, concrete staves and poured concrete among them with concrete stave and poured concrete emerging as the standard. There is no exact official count of agricultural silos in Wisconsin, as many are abandoned or no longer used. However, state historians estimate there are still tens of thousands dotting the landscape, a legacy of the state's massive dairy industry. Historically, Wisconsin has held the honor of having more silos than any other state, with numbers topping 100,000 by 1924. While thousands of the traditional upright concrete, stave, and tile silos still stand, they are slowly disappearing. Modern agricultural practices have shifted toward bunker silos and large plastic feed bags, and many old silos are being dismantled due to age and disuse. Prospectors flooding into the southwestern part of the state (like Mineral Point) dug directly into hillsides to extract ore. To survive the brutal winters, these miners lived in the dug-out tunnels, earning the nickname "badgers" for their burrowing habits. The tenacious moniker stuck and was eventually immortalized on the state seal (1851) and as the University of Wisconsin's mascot (Bucky Badger, 1940). It wasn't until 1957 that the American badger was officially designated the state animal, following a petition drive by four school children from Jefferson County. One might ask - are there actual "badger" animals in Wisconsin? Yes, Wisconsin has plenty of real, wild American Badgers! In fact, they are the state animal of Wisconsin. But despite the fierce mascot, actually seeing one in the wild is very rare because they are highly elusive, nocturnal, and spend most of their time underground. Opened in 1959, it is a complex of architecturally distinct rooms, streets, gardens, and shops designed by Alex Jordan, Jr. The "house" itself is atop Deer Shelter Rock, a column of rock approximately 60 by 70 feet by 200 feet on the top, which stands in a forest nearby. Additions were made to the original structure and other buildings added over the course of several decades. The complex now features "The Streets of Yesterday", a re-creation of an early twentieth century American town; "The Heritage of the Sea", featuring nautical exhibits and a 200-foot model of a fanciful whale-like sea creature battling a Kraken; "The Music of Yesterday", a huge collection of automatic music machines; and what the management bills as "the world's largest indoor carousel", among other attractions. In 2025, the Green Bay Packers organization and the NFL Draft asked the Barn Quilt Project Committee to create two customized quilts to be part of the NFL Draft Experience.
